Preparing your Images and Website Graphics

thumb_PixResizerAs part of our content preparation we need to consider the images and graphics that we wish to use on our website. It is really important to use correctly named images and correctly sized images on our website. One of the major problems with slow loading websites is that the images and graphics that have used a very high resolution and very large in size.

If you have images that have been taken with a digital camera you will find that these images are very large in file size. Before you use these images on your website, you need to resize them to make them suitable for use on the web. This is not so difficult because there is a simple tool that is free to download called PixResizer.

This program will allow you to down sample and resize all of your images in one batch.

Just a note on File Names...before you proceed...

Before resizing your images you should also rename the image file to something that is relevant to the image, for example if you have taken a photo with your digital camera the file name might be DCS125698. So what does that mean to us? Absolutely nothing. Now keeping in mind that search engines are looking for relevant content it also means absolutely nothing to the search engine when the come across a file with this type of file name. However, if the photo was of a Sunflower and we named the file Sunflower.jpg then for us it is easy to understand what the image is about and the same apply go for the search engines.

Now to resize

Simply place the images that you want to use into a folder on your computer, then create another folder where you would like the resize images to be stored (this avoids overwriting the original images). Open the PixResize the program, select the folder where the source images are located. then select the folder where you want the new resize images to be placed. Next chose a size for your images for example, 450 pixels, then select your output file type for example jpg. Then click the resize button and all your images will be resized to the new dimensions and file format.

Note Suitable file extensions for images to be used on the web are;

  • Jpg
  • Png
  • Gif

Once you have done this your images are now ready to be used on your website.
