thumb_10-step-planWhat ever we do in life we generally need a plan, whether it be planning our holidays or a party, or creating a business plan. Creating your website is no different you need a plan!

How Search Works

thumb_How-Search-WorksIn developing a website it is really important to start out with an understanding of what makes a good website and to understand what the search engines, like Google, are looking for from your website.

Let's start with watching this video from Matt Cutts one of the Google software engineers, here Matt explains in plain simple terms the way search works.

Researching your Keywords

KeywordsCreating content for your website may seem like a simple task, however, writing for the web is quite different to the way in which we were taught to write and like any project that we take on, there is a learning curve involved.

The first thing we need to do is research our topic, search engines rely upon keywords to establish the relevance of the content which is contained on the page.

Keywords are actually more like key phrases, when you search on the web you would not normally put in just a single word, like sales, you would be more likely to type in something like retail sales jobs, otherwise it would return far too many results.

Writing Good Content

thumb_Inbound-WriterNow you have done your keyword research you should try writing an article using your selected keywords and phrases from your  keyword list. Warning ! Don't try and use all of the keywords in your list as this will have the opposite effect as this could be considered Keyword Stuffing and you could get sandboxed (Google's equivalent of making your website sit on a chair in a corner... and you have to prove that you have been really good to get back out.)

However, next I am going to show you a handy tool which is effectivley your online writing coach, introducing "Inbound Writer".

Preparing your Images and Website Graphics

thumb_PixResizerAs part of our content preparation we need to consider the images and graphics that we wish to use on our website. It is really important to use correctly named images and correctly sized images on our website. One of the major problems with slow loading websites is that the images and graphics that have used a very high resolution and very large in size.

If you have images that have been taken with a digital camera you will find that these images are very large in file size. Before you use these images on your website, you need to resize them to make them suitable for use on the web. This is not so difficult because there is a simple tool that is free to download called PixResizer.

This program will allow you to down sample and resize all of your images in one batch.
